What I really avoid:

Tour buses. I find that they’re too touristy, and they’re no fun, and they keep you on the path that crowds and crowds of other tourists are on. Get off that path! Get into local neighborhoods! More on that below, but generally I avoid tour buses like the plague.

Tour groups. I don’t like being led, I like exploring on my own. That said, some walking tours can be fantastic if you have a great local guide. I recommend skipping these, looking stuff up and exploring on your own, or even better, finding a local to hang out with.

Cabs/Uber everywhere. I said above that I like Uber, but some people take them everywhere. I don’t judge them, but I don’t find that to be a good way to get to know a place. Instead, walk! Or ride public transit if you need to go further distances. Uber is to be used as a backup.
